Saginaw Spirit News Release

KITCHENER, ONT. - The Saginaw Spirit travelled to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Friday night for the second of four meetings against the Kitchener Rangers this season. The Rangers drew first blood in the season series back on October 25th in Kitchener, defeating the Spirit 4-3. The Spirit were able to hold on throughout most of the contest thanks largely to a two-goal performance by Matthew Kreis and impressive goaltending by David Ovsjannikov. This time around the Rangers took the reigns in a strong third period effort and defeated the Saginaw Spirit 6-2.

The Spirit trailed early in the first period after Saginaw's Kris Bennett was whistled for hooking. Kitchener's Jeremy Bracco set up Ryan MacInnis who beat Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier short side and put the Rangers up 1-0 over the Spirit. An even-strength goal on a partial breakaway by Mason Kohn gave Kitchener a 2-0 lead at 6:23 of the period. Saginaw's Cole Coskey quickly cut the Rangers lead to 2-1, after Artem Artemov and Dylan Sadowy set the rookie winger up to net his second goal of the season. Kitchener scored once more before the first intermission, after Brandon Robinson pushed the Rangers over the Spirit 3-1. David Ovsjannikov was summoned from the Spirit bench to relieve Cormier soon after. The Spirit outshot the Rangers in the first frame, 12-9.

A scoreless second period saw both teams exchange chances, with the Spirit outshooting the Rangers 12-11. Saginaw relied on several saves by Ovsjannikov and strong defense to keep the Spirit within two-goals of the Rangers throughout the middle frame.

Darby Llewellyn sparked Kitchener's scoring in the third period, giving the Ra ngers a 4-1 advantage at the 3:16 mark. Jeremy Bracco and Doug Blaisdell picked up the helpers on the play. Saginaw's Connor Brown put an initial effort on Kitchener's starting goaltender Zach Opilka, but was finished off by Brady Gilmour at 8:07 of the third period. Gilmour's third tally of the season lifted the Spirit within two-goals of the Rangers. Kitchener scored two more insurance goals before the final buzzer sounded. Darby Llewellyn notched his second goal of the evening and Jacob Cascagnette capitalized on the power play to take a 6-2 victory over the Saginaw Spirit. Final shots on goal were 34 apiece.
