Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas - Maxime Lagace's 42 saves in net were not enough for the Texas Stars in a 6-5 overtime loss to the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night at Cedar Park Center in front of 5,466 in attendance.
The win was Grand Rapids' 13th straight after scoring two goals in 10 seconds early in the third to knot the score and force the extra frame. Four different Texas players recorded multi-point games.
The Stars (35-22-6-3) continue their homestand on Wednesday when they welcome the Milwaukee Admirals to open up a two-game set at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Mitch Callahan at 5:36 and Jeff Hoggan at 5:46 scored the two Griffins (41-21-1-1) goals in the third to erase a 5-3 deficit. Eric Tangradi tallied the game-winner on the doorstep from Andy Miele's crossing pass 42 seconds into overtime to end the game.
Despite being outshot 48-18 in the hockey game, Texas opened up a 5-3 lead thanks to a three-goal second period. Matej Stransky tipped in a power play goal at 2:42 off Julius Honka's centering pass from the corner for his 15th of the season. Joakim Andersson answered back with a shorthanded strike at 9:24 to make it a 3-3 score but Curtis McKenzie responded less than a minute later with a power play rebound goal to regain the Texas lead. Cole Ully then slipped home a shot from the right circle with nine minutes to play in the frame to push the Stars in front by two.
Hoggan finished with two goals on the night and opened up the game's scoring at 3:27 of the first. 38 seconds later, Honka snapped a wrist shot from the point that beat Grand Rapids' Tom McCollum for the defenseman's 10th of the year. Matt Mangene made it a 2-1 Texas lead from the front of the net off a Mattias Backman feed at 7:53, but Ryan Sproul tied the game again on the power play for the Griffins at 16:12.
After putting up 40 saves on Wednesday night in a win over the Stars, McCollum finished with just 13 in the win. Lagace suffered the overtime loss after stopping 40-plus shots for the second time in his last three starts.
Texas finished 2-for-5 on the power play. Grand Rapids went 1-for-5.
