ERIE, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels survived a furious comeback from the Erie SeaWolves to claim the opener of a three-game series, 6-5, on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park.

The Squirrels opened the scoring against Erie left-hander Duane Below in the third inning. Jackson Williams started the frame with a double to the left-field corner and Ryan Lormand moved him to third with a bouncer to second base. Below walked Juan Ciriaco to put two aboard and Darren Ford gave Richmond the lead with a single to left field that plated Williams. Brandon Crawford followed with another single to left field that loaded the bases with one out. Thomas Neal brought in two runs with a single through the hole on the left-side of the infield that gave Richmond a 3-0 lead. A batter later, Conor Gillaspie capped the rally with an RBI single that brought in Crawford.

Juan Ciriaco tacked a run onto the Richmond lead in the fifth when he sent his first home run of the season to left field off of Below with two outs. The line-drive homer increased Richmond's advantage to 5-0.

Below (3-7) departed following the fourth to his seventh loss of the season. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out five.

Right-hander Jared Gayhart came on in relief in the fifth and was greeted rudely by Crawford, who doubled to open the inning of the wall in left field. Roger Kieschnick singled to left to move Crawford to third, and he scored the Squirrels' sixth run when Gillaspie lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.

Squirrels' right-hander David Mixon navigated through six scoreless innings before Erie exploded in the seventh. Mixon allowed a single to Shawn Roof to start the frame and then walked Alden Carrithers before he was removed from the game. Right-hander Daniel Turpen came on in relief and quickly allowed a double to Cale Iorg that brought home Erie's first run. Turpen followed by walking Andy Dirks to load the bases. Rawley Bishop then ripped a three-run double into the right-center field alley to pull Erie within two runs, 6-4. Tony Pena Jr. relieved Turpen and a batter later, Kody Kaiser made it a one-run game with a double down the left-field line.

Mixon (8-3) was charged with two of the runs over his six-plus innings. He earned the win as the Squirrels hung on for victory. Mixon tied Daryl Maday for the team-lead in victories with his eighth, allowing the runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four.

Pena lasted through the eighth inning before handing it off to closer Rafael Cova. Cova allowed a couple of runners to reach, but fanned Andy Bouchie to end the ballgame, earning his 13th save in the process.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park. LHP Clayton Tanner (4-5, 3.44) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Charles Furbush (0-0, ---) for Erie.
