Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - A four-run top of the ninth inning by the Bowie Baysox broke open a 1-1 game and lifted the Baysox past the Altoona Curve, 5-1, on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark. All four runs in the top of the ninth were charged to reliever Michael Dubee (3-2), who hadn't allowed a run in his last four outings. The loss snaps Altoona's six-game winning streak.

After starter Justin Wilson and reliever Derek Hankins combined for eight innings of one-run, three-hit baseball, the Baysox broke through in the ninth when third baseman Ryan Adams led off the inning with a home run off Dubee to make it, 2-1. After he struck out Tyler Henson, Joel Guzman singled and then tried to score on a double to the right-center field gap by Robbie Widlansky but was thrown out at the plate to keep the game at one run.

With two away, the Baysox went on to score two more runs on three hits off Dubee before turning it over to Jeff Sues. Sues allowed a single to Carlos Rojas to score the final run of the game for the Baysox before getting out of the inning.

Baysox starter Zach Britton (7-3) was in control all night long, tossing a season-high eight innings. His nine strikeouts in the game set a season-high and tied a career high. He retired the last 13 Curve hitters he faced and did not allow a hit after a two-out Jordy Mercer double in the fourth inning. Over the final two innings of the game, five of the six Altoona batters went down on strikes.

Wilson once again pitched well but earned a no decision. The southpaw allowed a solo home run to Caleb Joseph in the second but would not allow any other Baysox player to come around and score in his six innings of work. He worked his way out of jams in the fourth and fifth to preserve the tie game and wound up striking out six batters while walking a pair.

Altoona's lone run in the game came with two outs in the third inning when Antony Norman and Chase d'Arnaud doubled back-to-back to tie the game at one. Mercer finished the game 2-for-3 and had the only multi-hit game for the Curve.

The Curve (48-25) will look to rebound in the second game of the series with the Baysox (38-35) at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at BCB. RHP Tim Alderson (6-3, 4.50) will take the ball for Altoona while RHP Ryohei Tanaka (3-7, 4.68) starts for Bowie.
