State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Jesse Jenner and Thomas Spitz each produced a pair of hits, but the State College Spikes fell behind early and could not recover as they dropped an 8-1 decision to the Williamsport Crosscutters on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Jenner, making his professional debut, collected singles in each of his first two at-bats. The University of San Diego catcher, who was selected in the seventh round by the Cardinals in the 2015 MLB Draft, also made his first appearance behind the plate.
Spitz delivered a double in the sixth inning and scored the Spikes' (0-3) lone run after coming home on Leobaldo Pina's double down the left-field line.
Williamsport (3-0) took a 7-0 lead after four innings, with Jose Pujols contributing a two-run double in the first, Brendon Hayden hitting a two-run homer to right field in the third and Venn Biter driving in two more runs in the fourth.
The Crosscutters added a run in the ninth when they opened the frame with three straight singles and Austin Bossart brought Hayden home on a fielder's choice.
State College starter Dailyn Martinez (0-1) took the loss after yielding seven runs, six of them earned, on nine hits and a walk. The right-hander also struck out four batters over 3 1/3 innings and threw 71 pitches, 44 of them for strikes.
Reliever Nick Frey went 3 2/3 scoreless innings to keep Williamsport at bay, giving up four hits while striking out one batter.
Williamsport starter Jose Taveras (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings to pick up the victory. The right-hander allowed four hits, but no more than one in any inning, and one walks while striking out five batters. Taveras threw 72 pitches, 55 of them for strikes.
Hayden ended the game 4-for-5 one night after his teammate Pujols put together a four-hit game for the Crosscutters.
The loss marked the first time since the season-opening series of 2010 that the Spikes had been swept by the Crosscutters in a three-game set.
