Tigers Top 'Cats 1-0 in Series Finale

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Tri-City ValleyCats dropped the final game of their season-opening three-game set 1-0 to the Connecticut Tigers in Norwich, Conn., on Sunday afternoon, despite a third straight superb performance by their pitching staff.

Right-handed starter Dean Deetz allowed only four hits, three strikeouts, a single walk and one unearned run, while Joselo Pinales and Agapito Barrios combined to strike out three batters in three scoreless frames.

However, a fourth-inning rally that saw the host Tigers push a run across by hitting a single of the pitcher Deetz's foot, a bloop single into left field, a liner deflected off the glove of the third baseman Cesar Carrasco, and a ground ball misplayed by Carrasco, was all Connecticut needed to grab their only victory of the series.

First baseman Bryan Muniz (2-3 with a double), and second baseman Kolbey Carpenter (1-4 with a double) provided the offense for the ValleyCats. Tri-City, after allowing only two unearned runs in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning win, shutting out the Tigers 4-0 on Saturday, and allowing only the single unearned run on Sunday, completed the three-game set with the Tigers without allowing any earned runs.

They will look to keep up their strong pitching performances as they now head to Coney Island, N.Y., to start a three-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones. Game one will begin with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch, and feature a pitching matchup between 'Cats right-hander Harold Arauz, and Cyclones righty Matt Blackham.
