Lowell Spinners News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - The Lowell Spinners no-hit bid was foiled on a lead-off single by Vermont's Steven Pallares in the eighth inning, but the Spinners emerged with a season-opening series sweep regardless, topping the Lake Monsters, 5-0, Sunday evening at Centennial Field.

Pitching was the story of the day for the Spinners who were aiming for the second no-hitter in franchise history. Making his first start for the Spinners, Jake Cosart went the first four innings, walking three and hitting a batter while throwing 43 of his 74 pitches for strikes. Cosart struck out three. Taylor Nunez (1-0, 0.00) followed with three innings of relief, walking one and striking out a batter. Kent, making his professional debut, allowed the leadoff single to Pallares on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to end the no-hit bid, but pitched two scoreless to close out the win. He struck out two.

Lowell (3-0) jumped out to a lead after loading the bases with one-out in the second. A Jhon Nunez sacrifice fly gave the Spinners a 1-0 lead before Vermont escaped the inning.

The Spinners would add to the lead in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Bryan Hudson and Aneudis Peralta, followed by a walk to Tucker Tubbs loaded the bases. A Zach Kapstein sacrifice fly plated one run and a Victor Acosta RBI single pushed the Lowell lead to three. A Hudson single would plate Luis Alexander Basabe in the fourth after Basabe doubled and stole third to extend the lead to 4-0.

While Lowell pitchers continued to keep the Lake Monsters off the bases, Kapstein would bring in another run in the seventh on an RBI double in the seventh.

Basabe had three hits out of the nine-hole, adding two stolen bases and a run scored. Kapstein finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Hudson continued his strong start to the season, having picked up a hit and an RBI in each of the season's first three games atop the Lowell line-up.

The series sweep to start the season is the Spinners best start since they won five straight to begin the 2005 season, which incidentally started with a series sweep of Vermont (0-3).

Lowell now heads to Hudson Valley where the series opening road-trip continues. Right-hander Jose Almonte (NR) will make his season debut with a 6:35 first pitch.
