Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Aberdeen, MD (6/21/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades won a pair of games over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Sunday evening at Ripken Stadium. The Renegades defeated the IronBirds 2-1 in 15 innings, completing the suspended game from Saturday, June 20th and took game two by a score of 9-1 in a seven-inning contest. The Renegades improved to 3-0 on the season with the two wins while Aberdeen dropped to 0-3.

When play resumed in the first game with a 2-2 count and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Renegades relief pitcher Luis Urena needed just one pitch to end the inning on a strikeout. Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to force extra frames. Aberdeen had their best opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the 13th inning when they loaded the bases with no outs but Renegades reliever Michael Velasquez extended the game by retiring the next three batters in a row.

The 'Gades took the lead in the top of the 15th inning on a two-out RBI single by catcher Danny De La Calle, scoring third baseman Alex Schmidt who singled earlier in the inning. The Renegades wouldn't look back as Michael Velasquez (1-0) earned the win, striking out four batters in three innings of relief work while Aberdeen's Kevin Grendell (0-1) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the 15th inning.

In game two, the Renegades jumped out for two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI fly out by first baseman Hector Montes and an RBI double by catcher Taylor Hawkins. Hudson Valley doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning when left fielder Jose Paez drove in Schmidt, who led off the inning with a double, on a two-out single. Paez stole second base and after second baseman Oscar Sanay kept the inning alive with a walk, shortstop Jake Cronenworth brought in Paez with an RBI single. The score became 6-0 in favor of the Renegades in the top of the fifth inning when designated hitter Nic Wilson hit an RBI double and right fielder Cade Gotta followed with an RBI single.

Aberdeen picked up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as a run scored when IronBirds second baseman Drew Turbin grounded into a double play. The 'Gades added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning via a Hawkins RBI triple and a Schmidt two-run home run.

Roel Ramirez (1-0) earned the win for Hudson Valley as he gave up one run on seven hits in five innings. Francisco Jimenez (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

Notes: The pitching for Hudson Valley was strong during the three-game sweep over Aberdeen. In 31 innings, the Renegades pitching staff combined to allow four runs, two of which were earned, while walking just three batters and struck out 21.
