Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Three Spinner pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as Lowell completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters to open the 2015 New York-Penn League season with a 5-0 victory on Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

Starter Jake Cosart tossed four hitless innings with three walks, a hit batter and three strikeouts, while reliever Taylor Nunez had one walk and one strikeout in his three hitless innings. Matt Kent came on to retire the Lake Monsters in order in the seventh inning, but Vermont finally got its first hit of the game as Steven Pallares lined a clean single to center to open the eighth inning for his first professional hit.

Pallares, a 10th-round pick in the 2015 MLB draft out of San Diego State, was one of five draft picks in the Vermont starting lineup on Sunday making their pro debut. Two batters after Pallares' hit, Skye Bolt grounded a single to left field to give the fourth-round pick out of the University of North Carolina his first pro hit. Also making their pro debuts on Sunday were Mikey White (2nd-round out of Alabama), Chris Iriart (12th-round out of Nevada) and Ryan Howell (15th-round out of Houston).

The Spinners got on the scoreboard in the second on a Jhon Nunez sacrifice fly, then added two more runs in the third on a Zach Kapstein sac fly and Victor Acosta infield RBI single before scoring a fourth run in the fourth on a Bryan Hudson RBI groundout. All four Lowell runs came off Vermont starter Kevin Ferreras (0-1), who allowed six hits with one walk and four strikeouts over four innings.

Lowell added its fifth run in the seventh on a Kapstein RBI double to center off reliever Lee Sosa, while Dominique Vattuone tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Lake Monsters. The three wins for the Spinners marked the first time that Lowell has won three straight at Vermont since winning the first three games of a four-game series at Centennial Field back in 2008. It is also the first time in Vermont's 22-year history that the Lake Monsters have lost their first three home games of a season.

Vermont will try to get in the win column on Monday when the Lake Monsters continue the homestand with the first of a three-game series against the Aberdeen Ironbirds beginning at 7:05 pm.
