Auburn Doubledays News Release
BATAVIA, NY - For the first time since 2012, the Doubledays are 2-0 after last night's 10-inning 9-5 victory over the Muckdogs.
After a quick first inning in which both teams were retired in fewer than 10 pitches, Batavia struck first and scored a run on two singles and a pair of walks in the second.
Auburn responded with three of its own in the top of the third thanks to a triple by Conor Keniry in his first at-bat of the season and the first home runs of the year by Bryan Mejia and Matthew Page. In the home half of the third, the Muckdogs retook the lead thanks to a triple of their own by Stone Garrett, and a pair of singles from Eric Fisher and Blake Anderson.
After a scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth for both squads, the clutch hitting returned for the Doubledays in the seventh.
With one out and runners on second and third, Keniry battled through an at-bat before lining a two-run single up the middle to give Auburn a 5-4 lead.
After holding the Muckdogs scoreless in the seventh and eighth, the Doubledays were an out away from moving to 2-0 before Garrett hit a solo homer to left field to tie the game up at five.
But it didn't impact Auburn as the bats were clutch for the second night in a row, this time in the top of the tenth.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Steven Farnworth threw a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third. After Jakson Reetz walked to load the bases, Kelvin Gutierrez hit a two-run single. But it wasn't your typical two run single as it should have only resulted in one run if Batavia shortstop Anfernee Seymour hadn't throw the ball away after Gutierrez had already reached base. Luis Guzman then knocked a two run single into left to score two more.
In the bottom of the tenth Cole Plouck gave up a single en route to his first win of 2015.
Today's game is scheduled for 1:05 PM at Dwyer Stadium as the Doubledays go for the sweep.
Saturday's Particulars:
WP - Cole Plouck (1-0)
LP - Steven Farnworth (0-1)
SV - N/A
HR - AUB: Matthew Page (1), Bryan Mejia (1) BAT: Stone Garrett (1)
