August 20, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - State College Spikes Athletic Trainer Dan Martin was named the 2015 New York-Penn League Athletic Trainer of the Year on Wednesday, as announced by President Mark O'Neal of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS).
The award is given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League, with an additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year.
Martin, an Oregon native, is in his third season as the State College Spikes' Athletic Trainer, and his fourth season as an Athletic Trainer in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Martin has now run the training room for playoff teams in three consecutive seasons, helping keep the Spikes healthy as they won the New York-Penn League championship last season.
The Central Methodist (MO) University graduate also served in the same role for the Spikes when they won the Pinckney Division crown in 2013, and was the Athletic Trainer for the Johnson City Cardinals in 2012 as they made the Appalachian League playoffs.
As the NYPL Athletic Trainer of the Year, Martin will now join 15 other league winners, the Dominican Summer League winner and the Minor League Coordinator of the Year on the ballot for the prestigious Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year award voted upon by the full membership of PBATS. That award will be given at the 2015 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, TN.
"I am very proud to announce PBATS' Minor League Athletic Trainers of the Year," O'Neal said. "These athletic trainers made an impact on their entire league and stood out in 2015 as the best at their craft in their respective leagues. I am honored that they all showed the dedication and professionalism it took to keep their players on the field. This group represents the bright future that lies ahead for PBATS."
"This is a well-deserved honor for Dan," said Spikes General Manager Scott Walker. "We are privileged to be able to have him taking care of our players for the past three seasons, and he is a great asset to both the Spikes and Cardinals organizations."
Martin now looks to keep the Spikes healthy as they seek to defend their New York-Penn League championship and reach the playoffs for the third straight year.
