BURLINGTON, VT --- Aaron Mizell and Brooks Marlow both had solo home runs to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 5-2 New York-Penn League victory over Vermont on Thursday night at historic Centennial Field to complete a sweep of the two-game series and hand the Lake Monsters their season-high fourth straight loss.
Mizell got his second home run of the season with two outs in the first inning to give Tri-City a quick 1-0 lead, while Marlow snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a leadoff shot to left for his sixth home run of the season. The ValleyCats added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, including a Marlow RBI single for a 4-1 lead.
Tri-City starter Zac Person allowed one run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. After retiring the first nine Lake Monsters, Person allowed a leadoff infield single to Trace Loehr and a one-out RBI double to Brett Siddall that tied the game 1-1. Reliever Kevin McCanna took over for Person with two on, two out in the fourth and got out of the inning with a strikeout before allowing just one hit and striking out four more Lake Monsters over the next three innings to earn the win.
Vermont got its second run of the game in the ninth when Seth Brown led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Siddall sacrifice fly. The Lake Monsters were held to just five hits as Vermont (25-32) lost its fourth straight game for the first time this season (previously had lost three straight four times).
