Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Coming off a two-game sweep of the Crosscutters, the Scrappers went into the All-Star Break looking to stay in the win column after the break.
That's exactly what they did.
The Scrappers (26-29) took the first game of two against the Muckdogs (23-33) on Wednesday night in walk-off fashion, 7-6.
The win was not in typical style, but when wins come, they are taken. Mark Mathias was at the plate with Willi Castro on second and Silento Sayles on third. Mathias swung at Jordan Hillyer's first pitch, which was low and inside wild pitch. The ball went to the backstop, and Sayles scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Batavia jumped out first in the top of the first against starter Casey Shane. Taylor Munden singled and later scored on a throwing error from Ka'ai Tom. Stone Garrett doubled, and the error allowed Munden to score. It also allowed Garrett to get to third base.
The Scrappers responded. Willi Castro doubled and scored on a single for Tom.
The Muckdogs scored one more run in the top of the second. Travis Brewster finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubled. One of those doubles came in the second, and it scored Giovanny Alfonzo.
This game had two big innings -- one for each team. The Scrappers' big inning came in the bottom of the fourth.
Juan De La Cruz led off with a single, and Mathias followed with a double. With runners at second and third, Li-Jen Chu smashed his second home run of the year. For Chu, it was his second home run in two games. He also homered on Sunday against Williamsport.
After four, the Scrappers led 5-3. Mahoning Valley added another in the bottom of the fifth.
Garrett entered the night with three home runs and 11 RBI's against Mahoning Valley this season. He improved that with one pitch. With two runners on in the top of the eighth and the Scrappers on top 6-3, Garrett hit a three-run home run over the left field bullpen to tie the game. It was Garrett's 11th home run of the season.
If the rain stays away, the Scrappers have a chance to complete their second straight two-game sweep. First pitch is slated for 7:05. Thursday's game will be broadcast live on News Talk 600 WSOM rather than Sports Radio 1240.
