August 20, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears completed the sweep in the two-game series against the Auburn Doubledays with a 6-4 win on Thursday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark. For the second straight night, West Virginia used a three-run seventh inning to help claim the victory over Auburn. The Black Bears are now 29-29 overall after the victory while Auburn falls to a record of 26-30.
In the first inning, the Black Bears immediately loaded the bases after 2B Kevin Kramer lined a single up the middle before C Christian Kelley and RF Logan Hill were issued back-to-back walks. 3B Mitchell Tolman then grounded into a double-play, but plated a run to give the Black Bears an early 1-0 lead.
The Doubledays scored a run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead, but the Black Bears then struck again to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. DH Daniel Arribas led the inning off with a walk and then later scored on a lined double to left field to cut the lead to 3-2. The Black Bears wasted no time in scoring again after Kramer led the fifth off with a triple to right and then scoring on an RBI single up the middle by Kelley to make the score 3-3.
The Black Bears' offense erupted in the seventh inning after Auburn manager Gary Cathcart was ejected with one out. With runners on first and second, Kelley laid down a sacrifice bunt in which Doubledays third baseman Kelvin Guiterrez tried to get the out at third but sailed the ball into right field, allowing SS Erik Forgione to score from second. Later in the inning, Arribas singled to left field bringing home Kramer and Kelley to give West Virginia the 6-3 lead. Auburn would get a solo home run from Rhett Wiseman in the top of the eighth but the Black Bears held the Doubledays scoreless after that to secure the 6-4 victory.
SP Brandon Waddell tossed 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) with four strikeouts and four scattered hits. RP Eric Dorsch picked up the win (2-1) out of the bullpen after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings giving up only one hit. RP Tate Scioneaux earned his first save of the season after shutting down the Auburn offense in the last two innings of the game. Auburn P Mariano Rivera III was tagged with the loss (0-2) after pitching 2.0 innings in relief, allowing three runs (earned) on five hits.
The Black Bears will now travel to Mahoning Valley to face the Scrappers in a three-game series at Eastwood Field.
