Auburn Doubledays News Release
MORGANTOWN, WV - The Doubledays fell to the Black Bears Thursday by the score of 6-4. The loss dropped Auburn to 3-8 on the season against West Virginia in the regular season finale between the two teams.
The Doubledays had an opportunity in the first, but couldn't cash in. With one out, Max Schrock reached on an error by second baseman Kevin Kramer. Schrock then moved over to second when Kelvin Gutierrez walked to put runners on first and second with one out. But Rhett Wiseman flew out and Diomedes Eusebio grounded out to end the frame.
The Black Bears had an opportunity as well in the first and took advantage. Kramer led off with a single and moved to second when Christian Kelly walked. Logan Hill dug in next and walked to load the bases with no outs. But Taylor Guilbeau, the Doubledays' starting pitcher got out of the bases loaded jam by only giving up one run when he forced Mitchell Tolman to ground into a double play and Daniel Arribas to ground out to end the inning. After one West Virginia led Auburn 1-0.
In the top of the second, the Doubledays tied it up quickly. David Kerian led off with a double to right to lead off the inning. Kerian moved over to third on a ground out before Darryl Florentino drove him in with a single up the middle. Florentino was later stranded and after one and a half, the Doubledays and Black Bears were tied at one.
After a quick bottom of the second that featured three groundouts and a hit by pitch, but that's it, the Doubledays took the lead in the third.
Jake Jefferies led off with a walk before Schrock moved him over to third on a double. Jefferies then scored from third when Kelvin Gutierrez reached on a fielder's choice to give the 'Days a 2-1 lead.
An inning later in the fourth, the Doubledays added another run. Kerian led off with a triple to right. After Randy Encarnacion struck out for the first out, Florentino knocked in Kerian once again, this time with a groundout to first to give the Doubledays a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth the Black Bears started their comeback. Arribas led off with a walk and tow batters later scored on a long double to left by Albert Baur to put the score at 3-2. The very next inning in the fifth, West Virginia tied it up. Kramer led off with a triple and scored on a single up the middle by Christian Kelly to tie the game up at 3-3.
After a quick and quiet sixth, the Bears took the lead back in the seventh. Erik Forgione led off with a single to third that was nearly caught by Kelvin Gutierrez. Forgione then moved over to second on a bunt single by Kramer to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Christian Kelly then tried to bunt them over to second and third, but when Gutierrez tried to throw out Forgione at third, his throw was high and Forgione scored with Kramer advancing to third and Kelly to second as the Black Bears took a 4-3 lead. Logan Hill dug in next and was hit by a pitch. After Hill, Mitchell Tolman struck out looking before Arribas brought in Kramer and Kelly on a single to left to give West Virginia a 6-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth down 6-3, the Doubledays pulled one run closer. After Gutierrez struck out, Wiseman launched his team-high fourth homer to left on a ball that barely snuck over the wall and was nearly robbed by Ty Moore. The homer put the score at 6-4 with one out and nobody on in the eighth. Unfortunately for Auburn, nobody else reached base en route to the 6-4 loss.
