Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (27-28) split the brief two game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades (28-29) with a 6-1 win on Thursday night. The win snapped the Renegades five game-winning streak.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth Connecticut jumped all over Hudson Valley starter Cameron Varga (2-5) who had retired the first nine batters of the game. In fact if you date back to July 20th when Varga started at Connecticut he had retired 24 straight Tiger batters. However, that all changed in the fourth.

Mackenzie led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple by designated hitter Cam Gibson tying the score 1-1. It was the 23rd RBI of the season for Gibson. The next batter was first basemen Corey Baptist and drilled his first home run of the season to leftfield giving Connecticut a 3-1 lead. Third basemen Josh Lester (2-4, 2 2B) followed with a double as the Tigers hit for a cycle as a team in the inning.

With the score now 4-1 Connecticut added two more runs in the sixth against reliever Tomas Michelson. Lester started the inning with a double and scored on a home run by centerfielder Joey Havrilak (2-4). It was the third home run of the season for Havrilak and it made it 6-1 Tigers.

Sandy Baez (3-3) started the game for Connecticut and pitched well throughout. He allowed just one unearned one in the first inning and scattered six hits over six innings. Baez struck out five and walked two and has now allowed just one earned run over his last 18 innings pitched. Nate Fury (SV 3) worked the final three innings allowing no runs and two hits while striking out five.

Varga (2-5) took the loss as he worked five innings surrendering five hits and four runs all earned. He struck out three and walked two.

Connecticut will play the first game of a three game series at home against Vermont on Friday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
