Comeback 'Clones Win in Extras, 4-3

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (August 20, 2015) - In amazing come-from-behind fashion, the Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Lowell Spinners 4-3 on Thursday night after trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Lowell took a 3-2 lead in the eleventh but the Brooklyn bats countered with another two run outburst that allowed the 'Clones to walkoff with a win. Starter Kevin Canelon pitched a gem through the first 8.0 innings, with 70 of his 94 pitches being strikes, while Carlos Valdez (2-2) took the win for Brooklyn in relief.

It was a night of many chances for Brooklyn but seeing them through was the key. The Cyclones had their first scoring chance in the third. A single by both Enmanuel Zabala and Alfredo Reyes and a walk worked by Manuel Hilario loaded the bases for Brooklyn with one out. However, a line out and a close play ruled out at second base ended the inning scoreless.

The Spinners drew first blood in the fifth. After double put Lowell's runner in scoring position with one out, a single would score the first run of the game, with the 'Clones trailing 1-0.

Brooklyn saw another offensive opportunity slip through the cracks in the fifth. Zabala reached second after working a walk and stealing with Perez batting. Zabala ran home on a single by Perez but was tagged out sliding in while the Cyclones left fielder advanced to second. Perez took third on a passed ball by Lowell's catcher Jhon Nunez and another walk for Hilario put runners on the corners for Brooklyn. The threat ended after Reyes grounded into double play as the Cyclones ended the frame scoreless.

The Spinners managed just one more run off Canelon in the eighth. A single by Aneudis Peralta followed by back-to-back sacrifice bunts put Lowell runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly to center field then brought Peralta home as the Spinners advance to 2-0. Canelon finished his evening giving up two runs on four hits over eight innings while walking just one and striking out four.

With a deficit to overcome, Brooklyn worked an offensive rally in the ninth. A leadoff double by David Thompson followed by an infield single from Brandon Brosher began the frame. Both 'Clones advanced on a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Two RBI ground outs tied the game and despite having runners on first and second, the inning ended and sent the game into extras.

After right-hander Johnny Magliozzi came in and threw a scoreless ninth inning, Brooklyn's ace closer Alex Palsha took the mound to hold off the Spinners in the tenth. The southpaw Valdez made an appearance in the eleventh, allowing one earned run from a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt to give the Spinners a 3-2 lead.

In a thrilling final inning, the Cyclones offense finally delivered to give Brooklyn a victory. A leadoff double by Brosher was followed by a single from Hengelbert Rojas, putting runners at the corners for Brooklyn. First baseman Zach Mathieu then stepped up to plate and hit a game-tying double, scoring Brosher with no one out. An intentional walk to Enmanuel Zabala loaded the bases for Cyclones and with Perez batting on a 2-2 count, the left fielder was hit by a pitch allowing Rojas to score the game winning run to round out an exhilarating night of Brooklyn baseball.

The Cyclones will now head south for a weekend road series against the Aberdeen IronBirds. Right-hander Gaby Almonte, a league leader with six total wins, will take the hill for Brooklyn in the first of a three-game set. The Boys of Summer return home Monday August 24th for a commuter series with the Hudson Valley Renegades.
