Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Twice the Lowell Spinners had a chance to close out the Brooklyn Cyclones and twice the Cyclones battled back, ultimately handing the Spinners a crushing 4-3 defeat in 11-innings when Trevor Kelley hit Pedro Perez in the back with the bases loaded at MCU Park.
Lowell (30-28) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning after a Kyri Washington double got the inning going. Jhon Nunez battled, flaring a 1-2 offering into right centerfield to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn (27-30) appeared poised to tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning. Enmanuel Zabala would lead off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second base. Pedro Perez followed with a single up the middle, but Luis Basabe gunned Zabala down at the plate. With runners on the corners and one out, Daniel Gonzalez came out of the bullpen and Jeremy Rivera turned a fantastic 6-3 doubleplay to get the Spinners out of the inning.
The Spinners would extend their lead in the eighth inning with a bit of small ball. After Aneudis Peralta led off the inning with a single, Jhon Nunez beat out the sacrifice attempt to put the first two Lowell batters on. After Rivera sacrificed both men into scoring position, a Tate Matheny sacrifice fly extended the lead to 2-0.
Brooklyn sent the game to extras with a ninth inning rally. David Thompson led off the inning with a double and after an infield single, Kelley came out of the bullpen. Kelley's first pitch was a wild pitch, moving both runners into scoring position and a pair of slow choppers would score both to even the game at two.
Lowell re-took the lead in the top of the 11th after Basabe led off with a single. After Victor Acosta sacrificed him over a two-out single by Tyler Spoon in his Spinners debut gave Lowell the lead.
The Cyclones would not be silenced however, as Brandan Brosher led off the bottom of the 11th with a double and after a Zack Mathieu double tied it Brooklyn won it on the hit-by-pitch, handing the Spinners a crushing 4-3 defeat.
The Lowell offense remained quiet, generating just six hits, led by Nunez's two-hit game.
Javier Rodriguez started and pitched well, allowing no runs on three hits and three walks, striking out four. Gonzalez was charged with the two inherited runners allowed to score with Kelley, striking out three in 3.2. Kelley (1-2, 3.27) took the loss, striking out a pair in two plus.
The Spinners now hit the road again, returning to LeLacheur Park where the Staten Island Yankees await them. Dioscar Romero gets the ball to kick-off the six-game homestand with Friday's 7:05 first pitch.
