-SPIKES REGROUP TO FACE CROSSCUTTERS: The State College Spikes, who still hold sole possession of first place in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race by 1 1/2 games, continue their 10th Season this evening as they welcome their SawBuck Series rivals, the Williamsport Crosscutters, to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The two teams hold the two best records in the NYPL, with 3 1/2 games between them in the Pinckney Division race entering Thursday night. The Crosscutters sent eight players to the NYPL All-Star Game on Tuesday, with the Spikes contributing five players. Williamsport has taken three of the four games between the two teams this year, including two of three meetings at State College. All-time, the Spikes lead the SawBuck Series, 57-55, and hold a 32-25 record against the Crosscutters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Jacob Evans, Max Almonte and Steven De La Cruz teamed up to shut Williamsport out on four hits, and the Spikes gained a game on the Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division standings with a 5-0 win on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Evans earned the win for the second straight start after allowing just two hits and facing the minimum over five innings of work. The left-hander from Oklahoma needed just 55 pitches to get through his outing, and has not yet allowed an earned run in 15 innings as a starting pitcher. Evans also matched a career high in strikeouts with five on the night. Almonte then followed by yielding just one hit, which was erased on a double play ball, and striking out one over two innings. De La Cruz finished the evening with a pair of one-hit innings while also striking out five batters in the process.
-RODRIGUEZ STARTS FOR SPIKES: State College right-hander Jorge Rodriguez gets the ball for his 11th start of the season tonight. Rodriguez, who holds the second-best ERA in the New York-Penn League, yielded five runs, but just two earned, on seven hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings agains West Virginia last time out. Rodriguez last faced Williamsport on June 20 at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field, ending up with a no-decision after allowing a home run to Jan Hernandez in the fifth, the last time he has allowed an earned run on the road.
-CROSSCUTTERS SEND TAVERAS TO MOUND: Williamsport right-hander Jose Taveras will make his 10th start of the year for the Crosscutters tonight. Taveras faced the Spikes on June 21, earning the win with five innings of four-hit, shutout ball, but has allowed at least one run in each outing since then. Last time out, the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native yielded two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in a win over West Virginia. Taveras has allowed just a .233 batting average to right-handed hitters this year, with lefties posting a .305 mark against him, as well as a .408 on-base percentage.
-SPIKES PRODUCE, BUT SOUTH FALLS IN ALL-STAR GAME: Spikes representatives Leobaldo Pina, Mike Pritchard, Casey Grayson, Juan Perez and Landon Beck all made contributions to the South squad in the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, but the North won the annual showcase of baseball's future stars, 4-2, on Tuesday night at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. Pina went 1-for-4 with a second-inning double as the starting designated hitter, and remained in the game for its duration. Pritchard went 1-for-2 at the plate, and scored the South's first run. Grayson, who started at first base and stayed in the game for all nine innings, went 0-for-3, but also reached base with an eighth-inning walk. The Spikes' pair of pitchers each went a single inning on the hill. Perez allowed one run on one hit, one walk and a hit batsman in the fifth.
