South Carolina Stingrays News Release

South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that Steve Spencer is on his way to the team after spending training camp with the Albany River Rats of the AHL. Spencer will begin his third season with the Stingrays when the season begins on October 21st.

Last season, Spencer spent 40 games in the American League with Albany, racking up 67 penalty minutes, while scoring a goal and an assist. Spencer spent just 19 games with the Rays at the ECHL level a year ago. As a rookie, the 6'3" 220lb Spencer had 119 penalty minutes in 35 games with the Stingrays.

"Steve is one of the hardest hitting defensemen that we have ever had in Charleston," commented Fitzsimmons. "He doesn't ever take a shift off. We didn't expect to see him at this level this season. He will definitely help this club."

The Rays bolstered their defense last week with the signing on Nate Kiser. Spencer was a draft pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2002 entry draft.
