
South Bay Acquires Returning Player Rights to Gary Payton II

EL SEGUNDO - The South Bay Lakers have acquired the returning player rights to Gary Payton II in exchange for Sheldon Mac, the returning player rights to Robert Heyer and their original 2020 first round pick, it was announced today.
In 28 games (28 starts) with Capital City and Rio Grande Valley last season, Payton II averaged 16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.0 steals in 30.5 minutes per game and earned an NBA Call-Up to the Washington Wizards on January 21, 2019. In five playoff games with the Vipers, Payton II averaged 16.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.8 steals en route to the 2019 NBA G League Championship.
Payton II spent the 2017-18 season on a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers where he appeared in 11 NBA games and averaged 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists. With South Bay, the Oregon State alum averaged 17.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.9 steals in 17 games.
Across two seasons with South Bay, Heyer appeared in 76 games (28 starts), averaging 5.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
