Kane County Cougars News Release

Burlington, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars (12-8) finished a six-game road trip with a 6-3 loss to the Burlington Bees (13-7) on Wednesday afternoon at Community Field. The Bees scored all six of their runs in the first four innings off Cougar starting pitcher Franklyn Soriano.

In the bottom of the first inning, a Bees rally began with a one-out throwing error by Cougar shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. The next batter, Kevin Maitan, reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second with one out. Soriano walked the following two hitters to put the Bees up 1-0. Francisco Del Valle collected an RBI ground out to complete the first inning scoring, putting the Cougars in a 2-0 hole.

Soriano appeared to settle in during the second inning, but with one on and two outs, a walk proved to be the catalyst for another Burlington rally. Maitin followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. It became a four-run game on Spencer Griffin's RBI double.

The Cougars cut into the deficit in the third. Brandon Leyton was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Jorge Perez reached on an error and Eduardo Diaz singled to load the bases. Geraldo Perdomo delivered the Cougars' first run with a single to right field. However, the Bees punched right back in the bottom of the third, Connor Fitzsimons launched a two-out solo homer to push the Burlington edge to 5-1.

In the fourth, Soriano walked his fourth batter of the day, Livan Soto, to lead off the inning. The Cougar left-hander was pulled from the game due to an apparent injury after the free pass. Soriano's (2-1) day concluded with his first loss in 3+ innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Miller finished the fourth, allowing the inherited runner to score after a balk, a wild pitch then an RBI groundout off the bat of Kevin Maitan.

Miller and Wesley Rodriguez combined to hold Burlington scoreless over the rest of the afternoon. In the meantime, the Cougar offense chipped away. In the fifth, Jorge Perez tripled with one out and later scored on Geraldo Perdomo's RBI ground out. In the seventh, Perez came around to score once again, this time on an RBI double by Eduardo Diaz. Trailing 6-3, the Cougars brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth with one out, but Zac Almond and Brandon Leyton both aired out to end the threat.

Tyler Smith (2) worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save and pick up a win for Luis Alvarado (1-1).

The Cougars head back to Northwestern Medicine Field for four games against Cedar Rapids, beginning Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. LHP Bryan Valdez (1-0, 0.00) toes the rubber for the Cougars against RHP Blayne Enlow (2-1, 5.54). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or order online at kccougars.com.
