Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - Hunter Lee homered and scored two runs Wednesday night as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 4-3, in the rubber game of a three-game series at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Cedar Rapids (9-10) claimed a 2-1 series victory with back-to-back wins over Wisconsin (7-11).
The Kernels secured a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gabriel Maciel singled on the first pitch of the contest, and he scored during a Gabe Snyder triple. Snyder added a run of his own by scoring after a strikeout coupled with a wild pitch.
Lee came home within the third to stretch Cedar Rapids' lead to 3-0. He led off the inning with a single and advanced to third base after a single from Maciel. Two batters later, Trey Cabbage grounded out to drive in Lee.
A critical round-tripper by Lee during the fifth gave the Kernels a 4-0 advantage. Lee lifted an opposite-field fly ball that cleared the left-field wall for his second home run in as many games.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wisconsin broke up Luis Rijo's no-hit bid and started its comeback. Following a two-out walk for Gabriel GarcÃa, Brice Turang collected a double. Yeison Coca and David Fry hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Timber Rattlers on the scoreboard. Another tally in the seventh on Fry's run-scoring double cut Wisconsin's deficit to 4-3.
The Timber Rattlers threatened within the eighth inning but did not plate the game-tying run. Coca batted with two outs and the bases loaded, but he grounded to first base and was ruled out on a close play. Wisconsin was unable to challenge Cedar Rapids in the ninth, and the Kernels picked up the 4-3 triumph.
Jacob Blank (1-0) received credit for the victory in his Kernels debut. Tyler Palm notched his first hold, and Derek Molina earned his first save of the season by tossing a perfect ninth inning. Reese Olson (0-2) gave up all four Kernels runs within a five-inning start and was tagged with the loss.
For the next four days, Cedar Rapids will play Kane County to continue a seven-game road trip. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for the series opener. Kernels right-hander Blayne Enlow (2-1, 5.54) is scheduled to face Cougars southpaw Bryan Valdez (0-0, 0.00). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the contest on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com.
