Beloit Dominates on the Mound to Earn Series Win

April 24, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

CLINTON, IA - It was a pitcher's duel on Wednesday afternoon, but the Snappers came out on the right side of the scoreboard, defeating the Clinton LumberKings by a final tally of 2-0. Beloit pitching was absolutely brilliant today, surrendering just 2 hits total and completing the Snappers second shutout of the season.

Daniel Martinez got the start for Beloit and was masterful on the mound today, carrying a perfect game into the fifth inning. Martinez ended his day after five strong innings, surrendering just 1 hit, striking out 5, and earning the no-decision.

Martinez' counterpart, left-hander George Soriano, will end up earning a tough loss on the afternoon after carrying his own perfect game into the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Snappers would not only break up Soriano's bid for a perfect game, but would also break up the shutout, hanging a 2-spot on the board.

Lester Madden would lead the seventh off with a single to centerfield, giving the Snappers their first baserunner of the game. Then, Cobie Vance would follow Madden with a one out walk right before Madden was caught stealing trying to swipe third.

Now with a man on and one-away, Payton Squier would come to bat and lace a ball into left field putting runners on first and second. Just one batter later, Logan Farrar would extend his hitting streak to 4 games with a one-out RBI double that would plate both Vance and Squier to give the Snappers their first lead of the game.

However, Clinton would not go down quietly, as the LumberKings would load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh against Wandisson Charles, threatening to spoil the Snappers shutout. Charles though was up to the task and would punch out 3 straight LumberKings hitters to not only strand the bases loaded, but keep the Snappers lead at 2-0.

From there, it was smooth sailing for the Snappers, as Brandon Withers threw a perfect eighth inning and Eric Mariñez set down the LumberKings in order in the ninth to earn his third save on the season and the series victory for Beloit.

The Snappers will be back in action tomorrow when the stars of tomorrow return home to take on the Peoria Chiefs in the first of a 4-game set this weekend. First pitch at Pohlman Field is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.

The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and have been the Single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics since 2013. For more ticket information, contact the Snappers office at (608) 362-2272 or visit our website, www.snappersbaseball.com.
