Sobotka Recalled, Karsums Assigned

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have recalled center Vladimir Sobotka and assigned right wing Martins Karsums to Providence. With the moves, the P-Bruins have 21 players on their roster, including 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.

Sobotka, 21, was assigned to Providence on January 9, since appearing in two games and scoring two points (g, a) to extend his AHL point-streak to seven games. The center has registered nine points (3g, 6a) over that stretch, which dates back to November 28, 2008. Sobotka returns to Boston, where he has suited up in 15 games this season, recording a goal and an assist over two previous recalls. The second-year pro has added 23 points (11g, 12a) in 19 games for Providence overall. With the P-Bruins, Sobotka has seven multiple-point games and his 11 goals rank second on the team.

Sobotka split the 2007-08 campaign between Boston and Providence, appearing in 48 regular season games with Boston while amassing seven points (g, 6a), plus another six Stanley Cup Playoff contests, where he scored two goals versus the Montreal Canadiens. A native of Trebic, Czech Republic, Sobotka had 20 points (10g, 10a) and a plus-12 rating in 18 regular season games for the P-Bruins a year ago. He was drafted by Boston 106th overall in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Karsums, 22, returns to Providence following a two-game, four-day recall to Boston. The right wing recorded his first career NHL point with an assist in Boston's 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on January 10. In one previous call-up, Karsums made his NHL debut on December 13, 2008 against the Atlanta Thrashers before being returned to the P-Bruins following the game.

Karsums paces the Atlantic Division-leading P-Bruins with 39 points, including a club-best 16 goals to go along with 23 assists in 38 games. Of his 39 points, 20 have come on the power play (9g, 11a), which is tied for fourth in the AHL. The alternate captain and third-year pro has registered five point-streaks of at least three games this year, nine multiple-point outings, and he notched his 100th career point with a goal on October 12, 2008 against the Springfield Falcons. Karsums has also been named a reserve for the PlanetUSA team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications, marking his first career All-Star selection.

Karsums posted career-highs with 20 goals, 43 assists and 63 points in 79 games for the P-Bruins in 2007-08. He added another 10 points, including seven goals, in 10 playoff contests before recording three points in two games for Latvia in the IIHF World Championships. The native of Riga, Latvia, was drafted by Boston 64th overall in round two of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
