Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The Phantoms rebounded from a tough five-game road trip with a dominating 7-1 victory on Wednesday night against the Worcester Sharks at the Wachovia Spectrum. Jared Ross notched a hat trick and Flyers center Danny Briere, loaned to the Phantoms for a two-game conditioning stint, had a goal and an assist.
After being shut out in back to back games, Sean Curry broke the Phantoms scoreless streak early in the first period. Curry fired a low slapshot from the left point that found its way past Thomas Greiss and into the net to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead and snap a scoreless streak of of 125:47. Curry's goal would open the floodgates, leading to Philadelphia's first four-goal period of the season.
The Phantoms went up 2-0 thanks to the hard work of Briere, who out-battled two Sharks players along the left wing boards and threw a centering pass to Andreas Nodl. Greiss stopped Nodl's shot, but Patrick Maroon was there to put home the rebound for a power play goal at the 13:17 mark. With the assist, Briere continued an "unofficial" AHL scoring streak to ten games. He scored 11 goals and five assists over his final nine games with Springfield during the 2000-01 season.
Just over a minute later, Philadelphia beat the Sharks again with a beautiful display of passing. Streaking down the right side, Nodl found a wide open Danny Syvret on the left, who immediately sent a pass back across that Ross one timed past a helpless Greiss at 14:45.
Ross and the Phantoms weren't finished quite yet. With just over 13 seconds left in the first, Ross deked around Greiss, sending the puck from his forehand to his backhand and taking it just behind the net. Ross then sent the puck back to his forehand and tucked it around the post to score the fourth Phantoms goal of the period.
The second period opened just as the first had ended. Just over three minutes into the second, Jonathan Matsumoto attempted to stuff in a wraparound shot from behind the net, but Greiss sprawled out to make a pad save just before the puck crossed the goal line. Matsumoto persevered, jamming away at the loose puck and sending it over Greiss' left pad to put the Phantoms up 5-0.
After picking up an assist in the first period, Briere tallied his goal during a shorthanded situation. He intercepted a puck at the Phantoms line and entered the offensive zone one-on-one with a Sharks player. Briere faked a slapshot, throwing off the Worcester defender, and ripped a wrister past Greiss' blocker and into the top right corner of the net at 7:03.
The Sharks were finally able to beat Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe with about six minutes left in the second period. Ryan Vesce stripped a Phantoms defender of the puck in the left circle and threw a puck on net. Munroe got a piece of the shot, but Lukas Kaspars was able to poke it over the line to put the Sharks on the board.
The Phantoms would answer back in the waning moments of the frame when Ross completed his hat trick. Jason DeSantis fired a shot on Greiss that resulted in a goal mouth scramble. Facing center ice, Ross found the puck, spun around, and sent it past Greiss for his 16th goal of the season. It closed out the scoring with 1:15 to play in the second.
.
The Phantoms have now allowed at least 38 shots in nine consecutive games, but Munroe was more than ready for the barrage, stopping 42 of 43 en route to earning the win and second star of the game. Greiss turned aside 16 of 23 in taking the loss. The Phantoms special teams were at their best against the Sharks, going a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and 3-for-5 on the power play.
