April 16, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI- The Beloit Snappers scored seven runs in the second inning on their way to an 8-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars in the second game of their Midwest League doubleheader at Pohlman Field on Tuesday night in front of 383. The Cougars took game one 4-3 thanks to a final inning rally.
With the split, the Snappers now have a record of 5-7. The Cougars now sit at 4-7.
Beloit's big second inning started with them trailing 1-0 after Marco Hernandez doubled, stole third and scored on an error. Aaron Shipman knocked in the first run with a single to score Renato Nunez (2-3, 2 RBI), who led-off the frame with a double. After a walk loaded the bases, an error let in a second run and a Brett Vertigan sacrifice fly scored run number three. John Wooten (2-4, 2 RBI) then socked a double to left-center to bring across two more and, after another walk, Nunez hit his second double of the inning, tallying the sixth and seventh runs. Ryan Mathews made the score 8-1 with his third homer of the year to start the bottom of the third.
In the fourth, Kane County cut into the deficit with two runs. Run-scoring singles by Chadd Krist and Wes Darvill (2-3, RBI) made it a five run game, but Dakota Bacus (1-0) wouldn't let them get any closer. The right-hander, who entered the game in the fourth, finished his outing with three shutout innings, striking out five on the night.
In the first game, the Snappers got some help from Kane County in the first inning and were able to put up three runs. Vertigan reached on an error leading off and took third when Christopher Bostick singled and the right fielder booted the ball for another error. The Cougars third error of the inning came when Bruce Maxwell hit a grounder to first. The ball got through first baseman Dan Vogelbach and Vertigan scored. Nunez and Wooten (3-3, RBI) each added to the lead with RBI singles and Beloit went up 3-0.
Kane County's lineup was held in check until the sixth. After a walk and single to start the inning, Jeimer Candelario (1-3, 2 RBI) ripped a double to center to score one run. Two batters later, Hernandez knocked out another double to bring in Candelario and shave the deficit to 3-2.
Tyler Vail (0-2) was tasked with closing out the game, but couldn't hold the slim lead. Trey Martin was hit by a pitch to start things and promptly stole second. Oliver Zapata beat out a bunt single to put runners at the corners with no outs. After one out, Vogelbach (2-4, RBI) lined a game-tying single into center and Zapata took third. Candelario's sacrifice fly then plated Zapata with what would turn out to be the game winning run. Jeffry Antigua (1-1) pitched three scoreless frames, including a perfect seventh, to get the win.
The Snappers and the Cougars will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday with first pitch time at 6:30pm. The probables for the game are RHP Vince Voiro (0-1, 7.71 ERA) for Beloit and RHP Tayler Scott for Kane County (0-1, 4.50 ERA).
