Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
South Bend, IN - In their first game against in-state rival South Bend this season, the Fort Wayne TinCaps were defeated, 3-2, Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The TinCaps went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and were limited to just two hits, while also committing two errors.
Fort Wayne (6-5) scored the first two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Catcher Rodney Daal singled home both Brian Adams and Corey Adamson, but that was the only hit allowed by South Bend starter Cody Wheeler, who struck out a career-high nine batters. The TinCaps struck out 14 times on the night, falling one shy of their season high in that category.
South Bend (7-2) chipped away at the Fort Wayne lead, dumping in one unearned run against TinCaps starter Erik Cabrera. The righthander, who fell behind in the count against the first 12 batters he faced, worked five innings, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six. Cabrera departed with a 2-1 lead.
Ruben Mejia (0-1) allowed a run in the sixth, and left the game in the eighth inning with nobody out and runners on first and third. Chris Nunn followed Mejia, and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the game's go-ahead run to score. The Silver Hawks' Christopher Capper (1-0), who worked the eighth inning earned the victory, and R.J. Hively notched a save after holding the TinCaps scoreless in the ninth.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Jesse Darrah for South Bend. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
