Hawks Prevail in K-Stravaganza

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

A frigid night in South Bend was made even colder by an 8-knot north wind which was surely boosted by the breeze from the Silver Hawks' and Fort Wayne Tin Caps' bats, as the teams combined for twenty-three strikeouts Tuesday.

South Bend leftfielder Alex Glenn scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning and RJ Hively capped off the win for Chris Capper (1-0) as the Silver Hawks (7-2) defeated the TinCaps (6-5) 3-2.

Cody Wheeler went five innings for the Class-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, sitting down nine on strikes, while allowing only one hit and two earned runs. Through the first three innings, Wheeler faced the minimum, fanning six. His counterpart, Fort Wayne starter Erik Cabrera, did his best to keep the South Bend bats silent through five innings as he scattered four hits like apple seeds while striking out six.

Wheeler kept the TinCaps hitless until the top of the 5th inning. Briefly lighting Fort Wayne's hearts on fire, rightfielder Brian Adams started the rally with a free pass before stealing second base. Corey Adamson followed with another walk. As the duo of Adams and Adamson were in motion on a hit and run, first baseman Luis Tejada knocked an RBI bloop single to right field that scored Adams and moved Adamson to third. Adamson quickly stole home during a Wheeler pickoff attempt on Rodney Daal at first, giving the TinCaps, Class-A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres, a 2-0 lead.

This woke up the bats for the Silver Hawks, as they cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Breland Almadova bunted the ball back to Cabrera, and reached first as the pitcher threw the ball into the Hawks' bullpen. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Almadova was on the move again, heading to third after tagging up on Kevin Medrano's flyout to centerfield. Designated hitter Fidel Pena put the Hawks on the board with a single to center, scoring Almadova.

South Bend tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Glenn led off the inning with a single to right and proceeded to steal second base. After a groundout moved Glenn to third base, first baseman Frazier Hall stroked a game-tying single to centerfield.

The bottom of the eighth would prove to be the difference as the Hawks scored the go-ahead run. Glenn led off with his second hit of the night, a single to left. Ronnie Freeman stepped into the box and continued the rally with a single down the right field line that bounced off the bullpen wall and advanced Glenn to third. After Ryan Court entered to pitch hit, Chris Nunn's wild pitch scored Glenn and put South Bend ahead 3-2.

RJ Hively entered the game in the ninth and closed the door on TinCaps, notching his second save on the young season. Chris Capper (1-0) took the win for the Hawks, while Fort Wayne reliever Ruben Mejia (0-1) was tagged with loss.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05pm. Take a late, long lunch and come out for the Business Person's Special at the Cove.
