Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Javier Avendano allowed just one hit in six scoreless frames as the Lansing Lugnuts (4-6) beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-0 on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Lugnuts.
Coming off a loss in his last start to Bowling Green, Avendano (Win, 1-1) retired the first nine Whitecaps batters he faced and the Lugnuts offense did enough to earn him his first win of the season.
The Lugnuts struck early in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Ronnie Melendez was hit by the first pitch of the ballgame by Whitecaps starter Endrys Briceno (Loss, 0-1). On the next pitch, he stole second base and then advanced to third base on an errant pickoff attempt from Briceno. Dalton Pompey's RBI groundout gave Lansing a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Lansing pushed the advantage to 2-0. Gustavo Pierre doubled, one of two in the game, and scored on Christian Lopes' RBI single with two outs.
Lansing added two more insurance runs in the fourth inning. Santiago Nessy was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually came around to score on an Emilio Guerrero fielder's choice. Guerrero advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error by West Michigan shortstop David Gonzalez.
Game two of the three-game series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday night on Jackson Field. Lugnuts righty Taylor Cole (1-1, 5.19) will toe the rubber and take on Whitecaps right-hander Montreal Robertson (1-0, 1.64).
Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
