
Kernels sweep Twin-bill on first Twins Tuesday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels swept a twin-bill from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on the first "Twins Tuesday" of the 2013 season. Cedar Rapids topped the Timber Rattlers 3-0 in game one and 9-1 in game two. The Kernels will wear Minnesota Twins replica jerseys each Tuesday home game in 2013, as part of "Twins Tuesday."
In the 3-0 victory in game one, Brett Lee (2-0) was brilliant as he went 6 scoreless innings for the win. He scattered 6 hits, struck out 3, and walked 0. Tyler Jones closed the game out in the 7th inning for his 2nd save.
Jorge Polanco's RBI single scored J.D. Williams in the 3rd inning, putting Cedar Rapids up 1-0. The Kernels added 2 runs in the 6th inning for insurance. Romy Jimenez's RBI infield single scored Dalton Hicks, and Niko Goodrum scored on a fielding error as the Kernels took a 3-0 lead.
Brent Suter (0-1) took the loss for the Rattlers in 4 innings of work. He allowed 1 unearned run on 4 hits.
The Kernels offense showed up early in game two, rolling to a 9-1 win. Cedar Rapids sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the 1st inning and scored 8 runs. The first 10 batters all reached base, including 4 straight hits to begin the inning. Jorge Polanco's RBI double plated 2 runs. Adam Brett Walker's RBI fielder's choice scored another. Travis Harrison hit a 2-run home run to left, putting the Kernels up 5-0. After a hit batter and two walks, Byron Buxton's 2-run double put Cedar Rapids up 7-0. It was Buxton's 2nd hit of the frame. A RBI sacrifice fly by Tyler Grimes capped off the inning, extending the Kernels lead to 8-0.
A RBI fielder's choice hit by Jhonatan Arias in the 5th inning put the Kernels up 9-0. Michael Reed's triple in the 7th inning, followed by a RBI groundout by Mitch Haniger, put the Rattlers on the board and cut the Kernels lead to 9-1.
Steve Gruver made a spot start for the Kernels, and he was excellent. The lefty went 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 6 and walking 0. Tim Atherton (1-0) was credited with the win in 3 innings of relief work. Atherton allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 2 while walking 0.
Jorge Lopez (0-2) was roughed up for Wisconsin, recording only 1 out and allowing 8 earned runs.
