Chicago Sky News Release
The Sky will wrap up their back-to-back road games at Connecticut on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The two teams will become familiar with each other over the next month as this will be the first of three matchups within that timeframe.
In the team's first meeting of the season on June 15, Chicago won 78-66 on the road. The Sky were led in the win by rookie Hailey Van Lith who had a career-high 16 points off the bench. Chicago will be without Angel Reese, who recorded her first career triple-double in the matchup with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
Three other Sky players scored in double-digits as Chicago's offense caught fire. Kia Nurse did not miss a shot as she had 11 points, which included going 3 for 3 from three-point range.
Kamilla Cardoso and Ariel Atkins each notched 10 points last time out. Cardoso added seven rebounds and Atkins recorded five rebounds and four assists. Cardoso is coming off a 12-rebound game against the Fever and has been vital for the Sky, recording three double-doubles already in the month of August.
For the Sun, they were led by former Sky player Marina Mabrey who had 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Mabrey is averaging 15.0 points over the past six games, and is someone the Sky will have to plan for defensively. The Sun's leading scorer, Tina Charles, added 19 points and six rebounds.
Wednesday's game will be the third game for Connecticut's newest player, Aaliyah Edwards, who was acquired in a trade with the Mystics. Edwards was the No. 6 overall draft pick in 2024 and is averaging 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds on the season.
Chicago's defense excelled in the June win as they held the Sun below their season average in points, field goal percentage and assists. The Sun shot just 39.1% from the field on 15 assists. The Sky took advantage of their 12 forced turnovers, scoring 19 points.
Led by Van Lith, the Sky's bench outscored the Sun 36-2. Both teams are coming off losses, so expect a competitive game as the two teams match up well against each other.
The Sky trail the overall series 38-44, but Chicago will look to close the gap and get its second win over the Sun this season.
What to watch for the Sky: Staying disciplined through all four quarters.
After the Sky's loss against the Fever, Rachel Banham spoke about the team needing to stay disciplined during the entire game. Chicago had success against Indiana throughout the game, and despite the loss, were only outscored by two points in the second and fourth quarters.
Last time against the Sun, the Sky were outscored in the first quarter before winning the next three. If the Sky are to get the win, look for the team to put together a full-game performance as that has been a focus for the team in recent games.
