Simon Castro Named PCL Pitcher of the Week

May 11, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Albuquerque Isotopes right-hander Simon Castro was tabbed Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for May 4-10, the league office announced Monday morning. He is the first Isotopes reliever to earn the distinction.

Castro picked up the win in the Isotopes 17-inning affair Sunday evening against the Sacramento River Cats. He tossed the final three innings, allowing just a single hit and striking out five. In three games during the week, Castro combined to toss eight innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. He struck out eight and walked only a single batter. Castro held opponents to an .074 (2-for-27) batting average.

On the season, Castro is 4-1 in 12 appearances with a 3.57 ERA. He's allowed 13 hits over 17.2 innings of work to go along with seven earned runs. The Dominican Republic native has punched out 17 batters, while surrendering only three walks. His four victories lead all PCL relievers and are tied for tops among all league pitchers.

While the 27-year-old is the first Isotopes reliever to win PCL Pitcher of Week, he is the 13th Albuquerque pitcher overall to garner the distinction. It is the first weekly recognition for an Isotopes player since Carlos Frias was named Pitcher of the Week for June 15-21 during the 2014 season.

The Isotopes and River Cats will play the finale of their four-game series this afternoon at 1:05 p.m. MT. After back-to-back wins in Sacramento, Albuquerque is in line to win its first series at Raley Field in the team's history.
