Late Homers Not Enough To Top Tacoma

May 11, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - A grand slam by Jon Singleton in the eighth and a solo homer from Luis Flores in the ninth brought the Fresno Grizzlies (16-15) close, but it wasn't enough to topple the Tacoma Rainiers (14-18) Monday afternoon in front of 5,036 fans at Chukchansi Park. The Rainiers scored in seven of the nine innings on way to the 9-7 victory that dropped Fresno to a half game back of first place.

The No. 9 through No. 4 hitters for Tacoma went a combined 11-22 (.500) with six doubles, a triple, a homer, and seven RBI against Fresno pitching. Stefen Romero and Jesus Montero both knocked two doubles apiece, while Leury Bonilla hit his first homer of the season in the fourth and doubled in a run in the sixth.

Fresno starter Dan Straily was touched for five runs over 5.0 innings in the loss. He came into the game not having allowed a homer at the Triple-A level since August 31, 2014, but that ended when John Hicks led off the second with a homer and then had Leury Bonilla follow it up with a solo homer in the fourth.

Singleton's grand slam in the eighth cut the Tacoma lead to 7-6, but the Rainiers responded with two runs off righty Jordan Jankowski in the ninth to withstand a solo homer by Luis Flores in the bottom half. The grand slam by Singleton was his eighth homer of the season, while the five RBI mark a season high and are his most at the Triple-A level since August 3, 2013.

The Grizzlies take to the road Tuesday morning and begin an eight-game road swing with four-game sets at Albuquerque and El Paso. Joining the team will be MLB.com No. 3 overall prospect Carlos Correa, who was promoted by the Houston Astros from Double-A Corpus Christi earlier Sunday. Correa, 20, was hitting .385 (45-117) with 15 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 32 RBI, 15 stolen bases and a 1.185 OPS in 29 games for the Hooks this season. Entering Sunday, the Puerto Rico native led the Texas League in runs scored (25), hits, doubles, RBI, total bases (85), stolen bases, batting average, slugging (.726) and OPS. He also ranked tied for first in home runs and ranked second in on-base percentage (.459). Correa was drafted by the Houston Astros with the first overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

First pitch in Albuquerque on Tuesday night is at 5:35 p.m. PT, with Fresno right-hander Alex White (0-2, 5.82) taking on righty David Hale (0-1, 9.26). All of the action can be heard locally on 1430-AM KYNO or seen on MiLB.tv with a subscription. For more information, visit FresnoGrizzlies.com.
