Omaha Dominates Dodgers in Doubleheader

May 11, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (17-14) picked up two crucial wins against the first place Oklahoma City Dodgers (22-9), sweeping a doubleheader and earning a series split with a 10-0 win and a 10-4 win. It was the first time they have scored double-digits in both games of a twin bill in their PCL history, and was their most combined runs in a doubleheader in that same span.

The Storm Chasers had scored 11 total runs in the first six meetings against Oklahoma City, who came into the day the best pitching staff in the league statistically, and had only scored double-digit runs in one game all season in the season opener at New Orleans on April 9. In the first game, Omaha used a season-high 18 hits with every player recording at least one hit and in the second game Omaha opened with four runs in the first and scored five runs in their final three innings on 16 total hits (tied for their second highest total in a game this season).

Whit Merrifield had three hits and scored three runs in both of the games on the day, and currently leads the Pacific Coast League with 26 runs scored this season. Jose Martinez, after being the last player to register a hit in the first game, went 4-for-4 in the second game with five RBI upping his team-leading RBI total to 18 on the season. Casey Kotchman also totaled five hits and five RBI in the two games, finishing off a stellar homestand where he batted .500 (15-for-30).

The offense erupting benefited Omaha starters John Lamb and Joe Blanton, but neither truly needed it as they both earned their third win which is tied for the team lead with Louis Coleman. Lamb spun six shutout innings in the first game, his fourth career scoreless start at the Triple-A level, and the left-hander has now allowed just one run in his last 12.0 innings and three in his last 17.2 frames. Blanton narrowly missed recording his fourth consecutive quality start by only lasting 5.2 innings, but has allowed only six runs in his last 24.2 innings as a starter.

The Storm Chasers now head off to an eight-day, nine-game roadtrip to Round Rock and Memphis. In the series opener against the Express at the Dell Diamond, the Storm Chasers will send out RHP Clayton Mortensen (2-2, 5.49 ERA) to face off with Round Rock RHP Anthony Ranaudo (2-0, 3.08 ERA). First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
