Error in Extras Proves Costly as Zephyrs Fall

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Ed Easley's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove in the winning run to lift the Memphis Redbirds to a 2-1 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

A throwing error by Zephyrs third baseman Scott Sizemore put the winning run on base in the 10th. With one out, reliever Pat Urckfitz (0-2) uncorked a wild pitch to move Rafael Ortega into scoring position, and Easley delivered a single to right to give the Redbirds a walk-off win.

The error was only the second by the Zephyrs in the last 16 games, but both miscues led to walk-off losses on a road trip that saw New Orleans go 4-3. The Z's were prevented from recording their first series sweep in Memphis since April 2011.

Starters Andre Rienzo and Tim Cooney each allowed only one run through seven innings. Memphis broke on top in the first on a leadoff single by Dean Anna, who came around to score on a two-out single by Scott Moore.

The Z's were held scoreless until the sixth, when Brandon Bantz drilled his second home run of the season, a solo shot with two outs on the heels of a double play, one of three twin killings the Zephyrs bounced into on the day.

New Orleans finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners.

Miguel Rojas had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, while Cole Gillespie and Vinny Rottino each stretched their hitting streaks to nine games.

Sam Tuivailala (2-0) worked out of a jam in the top of the 10th by inducing an Isaac Galloway double play and was credited with the victory.

The Zephyrs return home on Tuesday to open a four-game set against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
