Tacoma Rainiers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Stefen Romero and Jesus Montero both notched a pair of doubles and combined for five RBI to lead the Tacoma Rainiers to a 9-7 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies on Monday afternoon at Chukchansi Park.
Tacoma starting pitcher Justin Germano (2-1, 1.74) posted his first quality start of the year, going 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts, earning the win.
Yoervis Medina worked the ninth inning for the Rainiers, allowing a solo home run but notching his first save of the year.
Fresno opened up the scoring with a two-out RBI double from Domingo Santana in the bottom of the first inning, putting Fresno up 1-0 early.
Tacoma would get the run back quickly, tying the game at 1-1 on a solo home run from John Hicks in the top of the second inning - the solo shot was Hicks' second home run of the series.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Romero and Montero in the third inning would put the Rainiers on top 3-1. Romero's double plated James Jones, who reached on a single to begin the inning and advanced to third on a fielding error and a stolen base.
Bonilla extended the Rainiers lead to 4-1 with a two-out solo home run in the fourth inning, his first home run and first RBI of the season.
Jon Singleton snagged a run back for the Grizzlies in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI ground out to Montero, scoring Alex Presley from third base.
A two-out rally for Tacoma in the fifth inning plated another run - Patrick Kivlehan roped a single off the outfield wall and came around to score on a Bonilla RBI double, giving the Rainiers a 6-2 advantage.
Romero and Montero combined for back-to-back doubles for the second time in the seventh inning, giving the Rainiers a run in six straight frames and pushing the lead to 7-2.
Fresno loaded the bases in the eighth inning on two walks and a single off Tacoma reliever Dominic Leone, setting up a grand slam home run from Jon Singleton that brought the Grizzlies within one run at 7-6.
Montero and Leon Landry gave the Rainiers a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, driving in James Jones and Marte on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly and putting the visitors up 9-6.
Luis Flores' solo shot in the Grizzlies half of the ninth was all the noise Medina would allow before shutting down Fresno to seal the Rainiers 9-7 victory.
The Rainiers (14-18) return home to begin a four-game series with Salt Lake (12-19) tomorrow, May 12. Tacoma calls on righty Sam Gaviglio (2-3, 5.83) to make the start opposite of the left-handed Andrew Heaney (4-0, 4.15) for the Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
