Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs used a strong start from Eric Joksich and a walk-off triple by Rubi Silva to top the Burlington Bees, 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Chiefs recorded their eighth victory in the club's final at-bat in another one-run game against Burlington. Peoria improves to 13-24 on the second half and 45-61 overall.

With a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the ninth, Taiwan Easterling led off with a bizarre infield single that deflected off of the pitcher's glove and ended up back at the plate. With one on and no outs, Silva attempted twice to sacrifice bunt but each rolled foul. He fouled off two more pitches swinging away and then drove a long fly ball to deep center field over the head of Tyreace House. As House threw the ball back in, Easterling turned on the jets and slid across the plate in front of the tag by John Nester for a 4-3 Chiefs win.

A pitchers' duel early in the game held both teams to five combined hits in the first five innings. Burlington put runners in scoring position in both the first and fifth inning but Jokisch escaped each time. The Chiefs left a runner on base in each of the first five innings. In the first inning, Rubi Silva was left on third base after hitting a one-out infield single, and advancing to second on a throwing error. In the third, Taiwan Easterling reached on an error with one out and moved to third on a single by Silva. However, Burlington broke out of the jam when Silva was caught stealing trying to force a rundown and Dustin Geiger flew out to right field.

Peoria broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Richard Jones smashed a one-out single to center field, Anthony Giansanti drilled a home run over the left field wall. The homer was the 10th of the season for Giansanti and his first since June 27.

However, the Bees' stung the Chiefs in the eighth inning to take the lead. After Alvaro Sosa replaced Pete Levitt on the mound, John Nester slammed a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Royce Consigli walked to put runners on the corners and Ryan Pineda hit a sacrifice fly into right field to make it a 2-1 game. After the sacrifice fly, Josh Whitaker thumped a double to the right field wall moving Consigli to third. Daniel Berlind replaced Sosa, and A.J. Kirby-Jones erased the Chiefs' lead with a double to left field to score Consigli and Whitaker to give the Bees' a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jones and Giansanti both drew a one-out walks off of Burlington reliever Sean Murphy. Elliot Soto doubled to right field to tie the game as Jones scored and Giansanti held at third. After Max Peterson relieved Murphy, Sergio Burruel walked to load the bases but Arismendy Alcantara struck out and Ben Klafczynski grounded into a force out.

Eric Jokisch pitched five shutout innings, increasing his scoreless streak to 13.1 consecutive innings. He also struck out four, walked three, and gave up two hits. Pete Levitt entered the game in the sixth inning and allowed just one walk and recorded one strikeout in two shutout innings pitched. Sosa gave up three runs, all earned, on two hits in just 1/3 inning of work. He walked one batter with no strikeouts. Berlind (1-3) blew his second save of the season, but earned his first win of the year with 1 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed one hit, no runs, and one walk.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Rubi Silva (CF) - Silva smashed a walk-off triple to deep center field to drive in Easterling for the 4-3 win. The center fielder went 3-for-5 including his third triple of the season.
