Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Oscar Taveras and Boone Whiting were both recognized as organizational Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, by the St. Louis Cardinals for their performance in July.

Taveras, 19, hit .402 for the month with 3 home runs and 27 RBI. He socked a total of 16 extra-base hits to contribute to his .637 slugging percentage over his 25 games played in July. Whiting, 22, went 1-0 in five starts in July with a 1.59 ERA. He compiled 30 strikeouts and walked just six batters in 34 innings for the month.

Taveras was signed by the Cardinals in 2008 out of Sosua in the Dominican Republic. The powerful outfielder garnered Midwest League Player of the Week honors mid-month when he hit .600 over 25 at bats for the week.

The Cardinals selected Whiting in the 18th Round of the 2010 June Draft out of Centenary College in Shreveport, La. The right-hander began the season in the bullpen, but was moved on the starting rotation in early June.

Whiting is the second River Bandits pitcher to earn monthly honors from the Cardinals. Jordan Swagerty was named the Pitcher of the Month by the Cards for April shortly before his promotion to Advanced-A Palm Beach. Taveras is the first Quad Cities position player to be recognized by the Cardinals this season.
