South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Lansing, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks rallied late with five runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to knock off the first place Lansing Lugnuts 6-3 on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Held to just one run through the first six innings, Gerson Montilla led off the seventh with a solo home run against Egan Smith (ND) to bring South Bend within one at 3-2. Montilla had three hits on the night, including a double in the fifth inning that led to a run when David Narodowski doubled him home to put the Silver Hawks on the board.

After Smith allowed just the two runs through seven innings, the Lugnuts brought in reliever Brandon Berl (LP, 3-2) to protect the one-run lead in the eighth. That lead lasted all of two batters as Roberto Ortiz doubled and Ender Inciarte reached on a sacrifice bunt combined with a Berl throwing error to tie the game at 3-3.

Niko Gallego dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt, and then Matt Helm picked up his third hit of the night with a RBI single to center to put the Hawks out in front for the first time on the night. Yazy Arbelo followed by launching a two-run homer to center, putting the final tally at 6-3. The blast was Arbelo's 24th of the season, leaving him one shy of tying Billy Martin for the Silver Hawks single season record set back in 2000.

The game was delayed 22 minutes at the start because of rain, and then another 23 minutes in the bottom of the second inning. Silver Hawks starter Bradin Hagens (ND) maintained his composure throughout, battling his way through five innings with two runs allowed.

Chris Odegaard (WP, 2-0) took over in the sixth and pitched two innings allowing only one run. Eury De La Rosa (SV, 4) recorded the final six outs for his fourth save.

Lansing was led offensively by Marcus Knecht with three hits, two runs, and one RBI. Oliver Dominguez had an interesting night with four plate appearances but no at-bats, walking three times and picking up a sacrifice fly.

The two teams continue the series at 7:05 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday night. RHP J.R. Bradley (4-12, 4.79 ERA) will start for South Bend while Lansing's starter is still to be announced. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
