Clinton LumberKings News Release
Grand Chute, WI - A sixth-inning two-run blast by Wisconsin's Jason Rogers proved to be the only runs needed against Clinton right-hander George Mieses as the Timber Rattlers defeated the LumberKings 2-1 on a muggy Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Mieses went 7.0 innings with just the two runs allowed on the home run, but fell as the Kings scored only once on five hits.
The LumberKings squandered early opportunities to score against Rattlers' right-hander Jimmy Nelson in the first two innings. Mike McGee opened the first with a single to right and Kevin Rivers walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Nelson worked free from the jam as he fanned Stefen Romero looking and induced Mickey Wiswall into a groundout.
Jake Schlander doubled into right-center and took third on a wild pitch with one out in the second inning, but again Nelson escaped harm as he struck out Anthony Phillips and Carlton Tanabe.
Mieses (L, 4-11) allowed only two hits over his first five innings, but Nick Shaw lined a one-out single and Rogers lifted off to deep left-center to put the Rattlers ahead, 2-0. The home run for Rogers - his fifth of the season - was his second against Mieses in a week.
Tim Morris walked with one out in the seventh, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a bunt single by Phillips. That hit cut the deficit to 2-1 and would be the only tally allowed by Nelson (W, 6-7) over 7.0 innings. The Rattlers' starter fanned eight while walking two.
Kings' right-hander Matt Bischoff pitched a scoreless eighth to keep the game tied and Stefen Romero singled off left-hander Alan Williams to begin the ninth. However, Williams (S, 1) avenged his July 29 loss to the LumberKings as he retired Wiswall, pinch-hitter Kalian Sams and Schlander to end the game.
Romero went 2-for-4 in the loss for Clinton while Rogers went 1-for-4 with the blast and two RBI for Wisconsin.
The LumberKings (19-18) continue the series with game two of the series against the Timber Rattlers (15-22) tomorrow afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field, first pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (4-3, 3.27) gets the start for Clinton against Wisconsin right-hander Brooks Hall (5-3, 3.96).
