Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-West Michigan starting pitcher Alex Burgos struck out 10 batters over six and one-third strong innings as the Whitecaps held off a ninth inning comeback bid and defeated the Dayton Dragons 9-6 on Tuesday night. The Dragons suffered their fifth straight loss before a crowd of 7,922 at Fifth Third Field.

The game featured many similarities to Monday's Dragons game, when Dayton entered the ninth inning trailing 8-0 and scored six runs to get the tying run to the plate with one out before falling short.

On Tuesday, the Dragons trailed 9-2 going to the bottom of the ninth and again got the tying run to the plate with one out. Ronald Torreyes started the rally with a single to left and with one out, Donald Lutz singled to right. Drew Poulk walked to load the bases, and Chris Berset followed with a two-run double to make it 9-4. Juan Duran delivered a two-run single to center to make it 9-6, and Frank Pfister singled to left to move Duran to second and bring the tying run to the plate. But pinch hitter Jaren Matthews grounded out to first and Billy Hamilton grounded to second to end the game.

Burgos retired 17 of the first 19 batters he faced, allowing only one hit and one walk over the first six innings while preventing the Dragons from advancing a runner past first base. In the seventh, with his team leading the game 8-0, he allowed a two-run home run to Dayton's David Vidal before departing.

West Michigan pounded out 17 hits. Nick Castellanos led the way with three hits and three runs batted in.

Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Robles suffered the loss to fall to 3-8. He worked four and one-third innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with one walk and four strikeouts. Reliever Brian Pearl followed Robles and also struggled. Pearl worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs, walking one and striking out one.

The Dragons collected nine hits including five in the ninth inning. Torreyes and Lutz each had two hits and Vidal's home run was his 15th of the year.

The Dragons host the Whitecaps on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Mitch Clarke (1-1, 2.00) will start for Dayton. The series continues through Friday.
