Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds tripped up in the series opener at Hagerstown, falling 4-2 to drop four games out of first place. Hagerstown scored three runs in the second inning, two on a costly error. Trey Mancini crushed his second home run of the year, but it wasn't enough for Delmarva. The Shorebirds will try to bounce back with Luc Rennie on the hill.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Lucas Giolito will start the middle game of the series for Hagerstown. Gio- lito is 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA for the Suns, but he has not pitched since May 11th. The hard-throwing right-hander squared off against Delmarva on April 16th in a hyped matchup with Hunter Harvey. Giolito did not disappoint with five scoreless innings allowing just two hits. The Shorebirds won that game 1-0 in 15 innings.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles earned a series split in Houston with a 9-4 victory over the Astros. Former Shorebird Manny Machado crushed his first career grand slam in the win. Wei-Yin Chen improved to 6-2 with the victory, and offseason acquisition David Lough hit his first home run as an Oriole. The O's are now 28-27 in 3rd place in the AL East.

THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
