Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds fell to the Hagerstown Suns for the second straight night with a 8-5 final score on Tuesday evening. Delmarva (34-34) suffered its first series loss since early May and has now falled five games out in the Northern Division.
Hagerstown built an advantage with steady offensive production off Shorebirds' starter Luc Rennie. Drew Ward hit a solo home run in the second to open the scoring. The Suns made it 2-0 on a RBi single by Narciso Mesa in the third inning.
Conor Bierfeldt halved the Suns lead with a solo blast in the top of the fourth, his fifth of the season. Hagerstown responded with six unanswered runs to extend their advantage to 8-1. Luc Rennie departed with one out in the fifth, having allowed five runs on nine hits. Dylan Rheault did not fare much better, giving up three runs in the sixth. Shorebirds catcher Chance Sisco and manager Ryan Minor were ejected in the sixth, arguing after Justin Viele collided with Brennan Middleton in pursuit of a grounder up the middle.
Mike Yastrzemski tried to singlehandedly bring the Shorebirds back, but Delmarva ultimately fell short. Yastrzemski hit a three-run home run in the seventh, and capped off his night with a solo shot in the ninth. The outfielder, who was named to the All-Star Game earlier on Tuesday, leads the team with eight home runs and 38 RBIs on the year.
Lucas Giolito fired three scoreless innings in his first start since May 11th for Hagerstown. Nick Pivetta earned the win in his return from the disabled list, recording his league-best eighth victory. Luc Rennie fell to 2-5 with the defeat for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds will try to avoid a series sweep on Wednesday evening. Hunter Harvey (3-3, 1.68) will start for Delmarva after being named the Northern Division starter in the upcoming All-Star Game. Fellow All-Star Austin Voth (2-3, 2.49) will start for Hagerstown. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Municipal Stadium.
