Game #57

RH Thaddius Lowry (0-3, 7.59) vs. RH Dovydas Neverauskas (3-2, 4.76)

Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) can clinch a second straight series win as they face the Power (A, Pirates) in the second game of this 3-game series. Kannapolis won Monday's series opener, 7-1, and has won all four games it has played in West Virginia in 2014. Thad Lowry makes his fourth start of the season while Dovydas Neverauskas makes his second appearance against the Intimidators.

Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his fourth start of the season as he tries to snap a string of three straight losses, including a rough outing May 28 at Hickory, in which he gave up six runs in 1.2 innings. Lowry has made a pair of road starts, going 0-2 with a 12.71 ERA (8 ER/5.2 IP) compared to 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA (1 ER/5 IP) at home. He made his pro debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). Lowry began last season in the bullpen, going 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in eight games before moving into the rotation and going 2-3 with a 5.18 ERA in seven starts. He struck out a career-high five in a relief appearance on July 9 against Danville. The Sox selected Lowry out of Spring (Texas) H.S.

Power Pitcher: Dovydas Neverauskas, 21, makes his 11th start of the year and his second against the Intimidators, working just 2.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits in a no decision April 21. He is coming off a season-long 6.0-inning outing in which he limited the Grasshoppers to one run on five hits in a no decision on May 29. Pittsburgh signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and assigned him to the GCL Pirates, where he made his professional debut at age 17. In three years in the GCL, he went 5-2 with a 3.97 ERA in 26 games (11 starts). In 2013 with Jamestown, he was 4-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 15 starts.

About Last Night: Trey Michalczewski hit a 3-run home run in the first inning on the way to a 7-1 Intimidators win at West Virginia on Monday. Danny Hayes and Jacob Morris each chipped in RBI-hits as part of a 3-run seventh inning. Michalczewski went 2-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored while Hayes finished 3-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Morris also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. On the mound, Andrew Mitchell took over for James Dykstra, spinning 3.2 scoreless innings while fanning five for the win.

A Bullish Pen: Andrew Mitchell struck out five batters over 3.2 innings on Monday and is now 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA (2 ER/16 IP) in six relief appearances for the Intimidators after opening the year in the Kannapolis rotation. As a starter, Mitchell was 2-1 with a 6.30 ERA (14 ER/20 IP) with 24 strikeouts and 20 walks. This season, he has struck out 43 over 36 IP while walking 37, the second-most walks in the league.

Hey Now, You're An All-Star: Jake Sanchez will represent Kannapolis in the SAL 2014 All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 17, in Hickory, N.C., as the lone Intimidators representative. He is 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 games (seven starts). He opened the season with an 18.1 scoreless innings streak. He is coming off his first career complete game with a win over Hagerstown in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Hot-Hitting Hunter: Hunter Jones went 1-4 Monday, upping his current hitting streak to a new career-long eight games since May 26. He is batting .367 (11-30) in those eight games after batting just .100 (4-40) in his first 11 games with Kannapolis. His previous career-long hitting streak was seven games, from August 4-20, 2011, with the AZL Indians, collecting one hit in each of the seven games he played. The outfielder's father Tracy played in the Major Leagues from 1986-91, including for three seasons with Pete Rose's Cincinnati Reds. Hunter now plays for Rose's son, Pete Rose Jr.

Speaking of Streaking: In addition to this current 8-game hitting streak by Hunter Jones, Trey Michalczewski has also be hot at the plate lately, tying his career-long 7-game hitting streak by going 2-4 on Monday. Michalczewski is batting .400 (10-25) since May 27 while equaling his 7-game streak while with Advanced Rookie Bristol from July 19-26, 2013. He has also reached base safely in nine straight games, a new season-high. Last season, the third baseman reached base safely in a career-high 15 straight games with Bristol.

Often On Base: Danny Hayes and Carl Thomore each continue to reach base safely for the Intimidators. Hayes has reached safely in his last 15 games, while Thomore has an active on-base streak on 10 games, a season-best for him.

Broadcast: This week's games in West Virginia and Asheville will not be broadcast on the Kannapolis Intimidators Baseball Network. Today's game can be heard live through the West Virginia Power's broadcast network, accessible through wvpower.com.
