Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The International League today announced Durham infielder Richie Shaffer was selected as the league's Batter of the Week for the week of August 17 to 23. Shaffer is the fourth member of the Bulls to be so honored this season.

Shaffer, who was optioned to Durham from Tampa Bay last Monday, joined the team in Louisville that night and proceeded to go 2-for-5, kicking off a week in which he hit .387 (12-for-31) with a league-high three home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored and 24 total bases as the Bulls went 6-1. The 24-year-old posted four multi-hit games in seven contests this past week, including a two-home run performance - his fourth multi-home run game of the season - in a 17-2 victory over Toledo on Aug. 19.

Tampa Bay's first round pick in 2012 out of Clemson, Shaffer ranks third in the International League with 19 home runs this year, despite appearing in just 62 games for the Bulls. Combined with his seven home runs with Double-A Montgomery to open the year, the Charlotte, NC native is tied for third among all minor leaguers with 26 home runs in 2015. Earlier this month Shaffer was promoted to Tampa Bay for the first time in his career, batting .263 with a pair of home runs and five runs scored in eight games.

Shaffer joins outfielder Corey Brown (June 8-14), utility man Taylor Motter (June 28 to July 5) and RHP Dylan Floro (April 9-12) as Bulls to be honored as either IL Batter or Pitcher of the Week this season.

The Durham Bulls return to the DBAP this Thursday to begin a six-game homestand featuring visits from the Charlotte Knights and Gwinnett Braves. Tickets for this homestand, and all of the remaining nine home games of the 2015 regular season, are available at durhambulls.com, the DBAP box office, or by calling 919.956.BULL.
