Charlotte Knights News Release

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - RHP Scott Carroll tossed seven impressive innings, Matt Davidson ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves by a score of 3-2 on Monday in the opening game of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark. The Knights also survived a late-inning surge from the G-Braves in the ninth to hold on for the win.

Making his 14th start of the season with the Knights, Carroll (6-4, 3.56) allowed just one run on five hits en route to his sixth win of the season. For Carroll, the seven-inning performance was his longest since a seven-inning win on April 13, 2014 at BB&T Ballpark against the Norfolk Tides. Monday's win also snapped a personal two-game losing skid for Carroll, who also struck-out four batters on the night.

Gwinnett scored first in the game and did so in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Todd Cunningham. Then it was Charlotte's turn.

In the bottom of the third inning, Drew Garcia and Leury Garcia recorded back-to-back one-out singles. Two batters later, after a Jason Coats flyout to centerfield, Dayan Viciedo drew a walk against Gwinnett starter Jake Brigham (3-1, 5.19), which loaded the bases for Davidson.

On the first pitch he saw from Brigham, Davidson drove the offering to deep left field for a two-run double, which put the Knights out on top by a score of 2-1. Charlotte tacked on one more run in the third on a Rob Brantly RBI single, which gave the Knights a 3-1 lead at that point. Leury Garcia had two of the club's eight hits to lift his batting average to .296 on the season.

The Braves did not go down quietly in the opener however.

In the top of the ninth inning, Gwinnett challenged Charlotte reliever Junior Guerra and pulled to within one run of the Knights. Daniel Castro hit an RBI single, which scored Sean Kazmar to make it a 3-2 ballgame. The G-Braves then brought the tying run to second base when Castro advanced on a wild pitch from Guerra. Still, the Knights were able to hold on for the win after Guerra got Jordan Lennerton to line out to right field to end the game. Guerra earned his sixth save of the season.

With the win on Monday, the Knights inched closer to the G-Braves in the standings. The Knights are now 6.5 games back in the IL South Division behind first place Norfolk and 2.5 games back of the second place Braves. Charlotte stayed an even six games back in the IL Wild Card race behind Columbus, who beat Toledo on Monday.

The Knights and G-Braves will continue their series on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. game from BB&T Ballpark. RHP Erik Johnson (10-8, 2.38) will get the start for the Knights against RHP Ryan Weber (4-2, 2.04) for Gwinnett. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and the first 3,000 fans will receive a baseball presented by Kellogg's.
