Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Pawtucket starter Edwin Escobar threw seven terrific innings to earn his second consecutive victory and help lead the PawSox to a 5-1 victory over the first-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series before 6,549 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Escobar (2-2) allowed just four hits and one run while striking out two batters and throwing 86 pitches. It was the longest start of the season for the left-hander, who has now permitted only two runs in his last four appearances covering a span of 20 innings.
Pawtucket's offense scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings against Scranton starter Eric Wooten (2-5) to build an early 3-1 advantage. Allen Craig's RBI single in the first opened the scoring, then Chris Marrero drilled a two-out RBI double in the third to make the score 3-0.
Mike Miller drove a solo home run (2) into the left-field bullpen with two outs in the fourth. Wooten would allow three runs on five hits in five innings of work while striking out six.
The RailRiders scored their only tally of the night in the top of the fifth against Escobar when Gary Sanchez lined a home run to left (6). But Pawtucket responded with a pair of runs against reliever Chris Martin in the sixth. After a one-out single by Jonathan Roof, Martin issued a walk to Garin Cecchini at the end of a lengthy at-bat to put two runners on base.
Matt Spring next lined an RBI single to center that plated Roof with the fourth Pawtucket run. Two batters later Deven Marrero grounded an RBI single to left that finished the scoring for the evening. Ryan Cook tossed two scoreless innings behind Escobar that included four punchouts.
Deven Marrero (2-for-5, RBI, run) and Carlos Rivero (2-for-3, walk, run, double) each had a pair of the PawSox' ten base hits. Austin Romine had two of Scranton's five base hits.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Right-hander Shawn Haviland (4-7, 4.42) is expected to get the start for Pawtucket while the RailRiders counter with righty Brady Lail (2-1, 3.68).
Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
