Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (8/24/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 9-0, on Monday night. Rochester starter Logan Darnell pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out nine.
Rochester (67-63) struck first, scoring in the top of the second inning off of Chiefs starter Richard Bleier. Danny Ortiz and Eric Fryer led off the inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. Following an Oswaldo Arcia single that resulted in Ortiz being tagged out during a pickle between third base and home, Rochester was back to runners on first and second with one out. After a fly out, Danny Santana singled, scoring Fryer and pushing Arcia to second. Jose Martinez then reached on an infield single, loading the bases. In the next at-bat, Xavier Avery singled to right to score Santana and Arcia, giving the Red Wings a 3-0 lead.
The Red Wings added to their total in the top of the fifth. With one out, Bleier hit Josmil Pinto and then gave up a double to Ortiz, giving Rochester runners on second and third. After a Fryer walk to load the bases, Arcia hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Pinto and increasing the Rochester lead to 4-0. The next batter, Argenis Diaz, doubled, scoring Ortiz and Fryer to put the Red Wings up 6-0.
In the top of the eighth, Ortiz added to the Rochester lead with one swing of the bat off Chiefs reliever Sam Runion. With two outs, Pinto singled to center. In the next at-bat, Ortiz laced a two-run home run over the new party deck in right field, increasing the Red Wings' lead to 8-0.
Rochester was not done there. In the top of the ninth, with Juan Gutierrez on the mound, Diaz singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a fielder's choice. With one out, Martinez singled putting runners on the corners. Avery then singled in Rochester's final run on a line drive to center, making the final score 9-0.
Syracuse (57-72) could not solve Darnell. The left-hander pitched a gem for Rochester, throwing a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Emmanuel Burriss broke up the no-hitter on an infield single in the seventh. Darnell pitched nine innings, striking out nine and allowing only five Chiefs hits.
Syracuse and Rochester play the second of five consecutive games on Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right hander A.J. Cole will get the start for Syracuse against left-hander Pat Dean of Rochester.
