Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Fighting Pheasants will be well represented at the 2010 American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 27, in Wichita. The league announced today that seven Sioux Falls Pheasants players will suit up for the North Division, more than any other team in the American Association.
Five position players and two pitchers will represent the Sioux Falls squad. Reggie Abercrombie (OF), Joe Anthonsen (2B), Trevor Lawhorn (3B), Beau Torbert (DH), Chris Salberg (P), Ryan Shaver (P) and Brandon Sing (1B) will take part in the exhibition game on July 27 in Wichita, Kan.
Abercrombie is batting .348 and is second in the league in home runs (14), first in RBI (56) and third in stolen bases (23). The Pheasants' speedy centerfielder leads the league in runs scored (56). Abercrombie is the only Pheasants player with major league experience.
Anthonsen makes his second consecutive appearance as a league All-Star. He is batting .308 as the Pheasants leadoff hitter with 22 RBI. He has recorded 16 multi-hit games this season and leads all second baseman with a .990 fielding percentage (minimum 100 total chances).
Lawhorn leads the division's third basemen with a .337 average, 10 home runs and 36 RBI. He was a 2009 All-Star with Sioux Falls.
Torbert leads the league with a blistering .409 average and 81 hits. He is fourth in home runs (11) and third in RBI (51). He has cracked 19 doubles and is second in slugging percentage (.692). Torbert was an All-Star in 2008, the same year he won the league's Player of the Year award.
Salberg is undefeated this season in 11 starts. He is tied for the league lead with eight wins. He is second with a stingy 2.67 ERA and 70 2/3 innings pitched. Earlier this year Salberg record his first complete-game victory.
Shaver is also undefeated with a 5-0 record and a 3.39 ERA, seventh best in the league. Shaver earlier this season had a streak of 24 1/3 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run.
Sing is a triple-crown candidate. He has a third-best .382 average and leads the league with 18 home runs. He is second with 53 RBI. His intimidating presence at the plate has led to 43 walks this season.
Players were voted to the team by the American Association managers and media. The manager of each division is the skipper from each division champion last year. Marty Scott (Lincoln) leads the North Division and Talmadge Nunnari (Pensacola) guides the South Division.
The American Associatin All-Star Game is scheduled for 705 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
